Last updated: August 2026. A UAE residence cancellation does not cancel a car loan. The bank’s finance contract and the vehicle mortgage remain in place until the bank confirms settlement or approves another arrangement.
Short answer: You can normally plan to leave while a car loan is still active, but an unpaid loan is not erased by departure. Do not assume missed payments create an automatic travel ban, and do not assume a clear airport check means the debt is solved. A creditor must obtain a court order for a civil travel ban.
Choose the route that matches your car
| Your situation | Ask the bank for | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Car value is higher than the settlement figure | Written liability or early-settlement figure and mortgage-release process | Arrange a sale that pays the bank first, then transfer the vehicle after electronic mortgage release |
| Car value is lower than the settlement figure | Exact shortfall and written repayment options | Pay or agree the shortfall before expecting the mortgage to be released |
| You can keep paying from abroad | Written confirmation that the account and payment method can continue after residence cancellation | Confirm insurance, registration, possession, and who may legally use the vehicle |
| You have already missed payments | Arrears statement, legal-case status, and a written proposed arrangement | Deal with the collections or recovery team and check for a court case separately |
The five numbers to request in writing
- Outstanding principal
- Arrears and late-payment charges
- Early-settlement fee
- Total settlement figure and its expiry date
- Any shortfall after the expected sale price
The UAE Central Bank’s published fee table currently lists car-loan early settlement at 1% of the outstanding amount and an NOC to the traffic department at zero fee. Your written statement should still be checked because tax, arrears, insurance, and contract-specific amounts may appear separately.
How a financed-car sale usually works
- Request the current settlement figure from the lender.
- Ask the lender exactly how a buyer’s payment must be made and when mortgage release will be sent electronically.
- Do not promise the buyer that transfer is possible before the lender confirms the release procedure.
- After the lender records settlement, complete the ownership transfer through the relevant traffic authority.
- Keep the settlement receipt, mortgage-release confirmation, transfer certificate, and final no-liability letter.
For a Dubai-registered vehicle, the RTA transfer service lists electronic mortgage release where a mortgage exists. Procedures can differ for vehicles registered in another emirate, so use that emirate’s traffic authority and the lender’s instructions.
If the sale will not cover the balance
Ask the bank to state the shortfall and proposed payment arrangement in writing. There is no standard settlement discount that every bank accepts. Do not build a plan around a claimed 20%, 30%, or 50% discount from an online article. The lender decides whether to accept a revised arrangement.
Central Bank consumer standards require licensed financial institutions to discuss options with consumers in arrears and to provide a revised payment arrangement in writing when one is agreed. The document should explain the schedule and how payments are allocated.
Does the loan automatically create a travel ban?
No. Owning money or missing one instalment is not itself the same as a court travel-ban order. Article 324 of the UAE Civil Procedure Code allows a creditor to ask a judge for a travel ban in specified circumstances, including a debt of at least AED 10,000, a due debt, written evidence, and serious reasons to fear the debtor will leave. The creditor applies; the judge decides.
The AED 10,000 threshold is a condition in the legal route. It is not a promise that a smaller debt is harmless, will not be collected, or will not affect credit records. It is also not proof that a ban exists in a particular case.
If your bank will not answer or correct an error
Use the bank’s formal complaint channel and keep the complaint reference. If the bank does not resolve the complaint, the UAE Central Bank directs consumers to Sanadak, the independent banking and insurance ombudsman. Sanadak does not erase a valid debt, but it is the official escalation route for a complaint about a licensed financial institution.
Before your flight
- Check whether any legal case or travel restriction exists through the official channel for the relevant emirate.
- Carry the bank’s current settlement or arrangement letter; do not rely on a phone promise.
- Do not hand over the car while the registration and mortgage remain in your name.
- Keep enough time for the bank and traffic authority to update their records. No universal number of days is guaranteed.
