Quick Summary
- Qatar end of service gratuity is a legal right for all foreign workers after 1 year of service.
- The minimum is 3 weeks basic salary per year — calculated on your last basic salary only.
- Formula: (Basic Salary ÷ 30) × 21 × Years of Service
- Contact Qatar Ministry of Labour at 16008 if your employer refuses to pay.
If you are leaving Qatar after working there for one year or more, you are entitled to Qatar end of service gratuity. This is a legal payment your employer must make when your contract ends — whether you resign, get terminated, or your contract expires. Many workers do not know the exact amount they are owed, or their employer tries to pay less than the law requires.
This guide tells you exactly how to calculate your Qatar end of service gratuity, when you are eligible, and what to do if your employer refuses to pay.
Who Is Eligible for Qatar End of Service Gratuity?
Under Article 54 of Qatar Labour Law, all foreign workers (non-Qatari employees) who have completed at least one year of continuous service with the same employer are entitled to end of service gratuity. This applies regardless of:
- Whether you have a fixed-term or indefinite contract
- Whether you resigned, were terminated, or completed a contract
- Your nationality or job category (with some exceptions for domestic workers under separate rules)
If you have worked for less than one year, you are not entitled to gratuity under Qatar law. However, if your employer terminated you without cause before the one-year mark, you may have other claims — contact the Ministry of Labour.
How to Calculate Qatar End of Service Gratuity
The calculation is based on your last basic salary — not your total salary package. Housing allowance, transport allowance, food allowance, and bonuses are not included in the gratuity calculation.
The Formula (Article 54)
Gratuity = (Basic Salary ÷ 30) × 21 × Years of Service
This means you receive 21 days of basic salary for each full year you worked. For partial years, the amount is calculated proportionally.
Worked Example
| Details | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly Basic Salary | QAR 2,000 |
| Daily Basic Salary (÷ 30) | QAR 66.67 |
| Gratuity per Year (× 21) | QAR 1,400 |
| Years of Service | 3 years |
| Total Gratuity Due | QAR 4,200 |
If you worked 3 years and 6 months, the 6-month partial year is calculated as: QAR 1,400 ÷ 12 × 6 = QAR 700. So total would be QAR 4,900.
When Does Your Employer Pay Qatar Gratuity?
Your employer must pay your Qatar end of service gratuity at the time your employment ends. This means on or before your last working day — or at the latest when your visa is cancelled and you are ready to leave.
If your employer delays payment without a valid reason, you can file a complaint with the Qatar Ministry of Labour. Under Qatar law, delayed gratuity payment is treated as a wage violation.
What Counts as Your “Basic Salary” for Gratuity?
Your basic salary is the fixed monthly amount in your employment contract — before any allowances are added. Check your employment contract for the line that says “basic salary” or “basic wage.”
Common allowances that are NOT included in gratuity calculation:
- Housing or accommodation allowance
- Transportation or car allowance
- Food or meal allowance
- Annual performance bonuses
- Overtime pay
If your employer argues that your housing or transport allowance is part of your “salary” for gratuity purposes, ask them to show you the contract. The law is based on the basic wage.
Does Gratuity Apply If You Resign?
Yes. Qatar end of service gratuity applies regardless of how your employment ends — including resignation. Article 54 does not distinguish between termination and resignation for gratuity purposes. If you have completed at least one year, you are entitled to your full gratuity even if you quit.
This is different from some other countries where gratuity is reduced or cancelled if the employee resigns. In Qatar, your gratuity is yours either way.
Can Your Employer Deduct from Your Gratuity?
Your employer can deduct from your final settlement if you owe money — for example, for a loan or advance payment you received from them. However, they cannot deduct gratuity as a penalty for resigning or for any reason not stated in your contract.
If there is a dispute about deductions, request a written breakdown of your final settlement before signing any document. Do not sign a settlement form if you disagree with the amount.
How to Claim Qatar End of Service Gratuity If Your Employer Refuses
- Request payment in writing — Send a message (WhatsApp or email) to your employer asking for your final settlement and gratuity calculation. Keep a copy.
- Contact the Ministry of Labour — Call 16008 (Qatar Ministry of Labour hotline) or visit the Complaints Department at the Ministry in Doha.
- File an online complaint — Use the Ministry of Labour portal at adlsa.gov.qa to file a wage complaint. The process is free.
- Wait for mediation — The Ministry will call both parties. If mediation fails, the case goes to the Labour Dispute Resolution Committee (LDRC).
- LDRC hearing — The LDRC resolves most cases within 3 months. Judgements are legally binding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I get Qatar gratuity if I am fired for misconduct?
It depends on the reason. Qatar Labour Law allows the employer to forfeit gratuity only in specific cases of gross misconduct listed in Article 61 (such as providing false documents or causing intentional damage). For most terminations — including performance-based dismissal — you still receive your full gratuity.
My employer included allowances in my salary card. Which amount is used for gratuity?
Only the basic salary in your employment contract is used. If your payslip shows a breakdown, use the “basic” or “basic wage” line. If everything is shown as one number, ask your employer for a written breakdown, or check your original employment contract.
I worked 2 years and 8 months. How is my partial year calculated?
The full 2 years are calculated at 21 days each. The remaining 8 months are calculated proportionally: (21 days × 8 ÷ 12) = 14 days of basic salary. Add all years together for your total gratuity amount.
What is the latest my employer can pay my gratuity?
Qatar law requires payment at the end of service. In practice, most employers pay within 1–2 weeks of your last day. If payment is delayed beyond that without reason, you can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour at 16008.
Can I receive my Qatar gratuity in my home country bank account?
Yes. You can request your employer to transfer it to any bank account, including in your home country. Many workers choose to receive it before leaving Qatar to avoid complications. Your employer cannot refuse to pay it in cash or bank transfer if you request either.
I left Qatar 3 years ago without collecting gratuity. Can I still claim it?
Qatar has a statute of limitations on labour claims. Generally, claims must be filed within one year of the end of employment. If more than one year has passed, it may be difficult to claim — but contact the Ministry of Labour at 16008 for your specific situation.
